Abstract

The Emergency Department is one of the important departments in the hospital that affects patient satisfaction and the performance of other hospital departments. This study was conducted to evaluate the admission, hospitalization, and discharge processes of patients referred to a primary hospital. This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 518 patients hospitalized in the emergency department of Afzalipour Kerman Hospital in 2017. A data entry form was used to collect data, which included demographic information and information about the process and timing of emergency services. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistical tests. Patients discharged from the emergency department comprised 19.3%, while 3% were referred to other hospitals. Among all patients, 1.4% expired, and the remaining patients were referred to other departments of the hospital. The mean admission time was 15.6 minutes, the time to the final decision was 6.1 hours, the time to the first therapeutic procedure was 2.8 minutes, the time to get laboratory results was 2.1 hours, and the consultation time was 2.4 hours. Overall, it can be concluded that the admission, hospitalization, and discharge processes of patients referred to the emergency department are within a relatively acceptable range, which can be improved through management and process measures.
