Abstract

Background: This study investigates the influence of ethnicity on perceived concerns regarding violence against healthcare workers in diverse settings.

Methods: This was a secondary data analysis from a WHO violence against health workers survey conducted in the emergency department of Hashminejad, Qaem and Imam Reza hospitals in Mashhad in 2022-2023.  The sample consisted of 206 respondents. Demographic characteristics, including age, gender, marital status, professional role, years of experience, and employment status, were examined along with ethnicity at country, community, and workplace levels. Statistical analyses were conducted to identify significant disparities. Perceived worries were collected from a question of WHO questionary with ordinal Likert based rating of not worried at all to very worried.

Results: The majority ethnicity in country level consisted of 183 participants, while the minority group comprised 23 participants, 159 and 47 for community level, and 131 and 75 in workplace level, respectively. Significant differences in gender, marital status, professional roles, years of experience, and employment status were observed between majority and minority ethnicities across various levels. In non-adjusted model, being minority of country, community, and workplace was associated with respectively, 5.93 (95% CI of 3.7-9.5), 0.18 (95% CI of 0.11-0.28), 1.58 (95% CI of 1.12-2.25) times, higher odds of having one grade higher perceived worries than majority ethnic groups. Linear regression models, adjusted for pertinent variables, revealed that being a minority at the national, community, and workplace levels was associated with higher odds of reporting heightened concerns about violence against healthcare workers.

Conclusion: The findings underscore the necessity for tailored interventions to address the unique concerns of ethnic minorities within healthcare environments.
